Day 1: Today, we are greeted by our professional Bianco tour guide and driver and begin our journey to our nation’s capital, Washington, DC. We arrive in Arlington, Virginia where we check into the Embassy Suites Hotel, our home for the next four nights. Day 2: A full breakfast buffet awaits us this morning before going back in time to Mount Vernon, the historic estate of our first President. The Mansion is now home to theaters and galleries which tell the detailed story of George Washington’s life. We will enjoy lunch at Mount Vernon before heading for Arlington National Cemetery. After stops at some of Washington’s Memorials, we will make our way to Arlington National Cemetery and step P continued on back back in time into our nation’s history and remember the American Patriots, both humble and well-known, whose final resting place is in the hills of Arlington. Gaze upon the tomb of the unknown solider which is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and visit John F. Kennedy’s grave. Dinner is included tonight at the Royal Restaurant. Day 3: After another included breakfast, we continue to explore the history of Washington DC. Our first stop is the People’s House Museum - A White House Experience. Through technology you can tour the White House rooms and their artifacts. You can even participate in a State Dinner. Our next stop is the United States Capitol. Our guide will show us the highlights of this working government building and we can also explore many interactive exhibits. Dinner is included at the Elephant & Castle Restaurant before we tour Monuments and Memorials with a local guide. Stops will be made at the Lincoln, Korean, FDR, MLK and WWII Memorials and of course, we will see the The Washington Monument and the Vietnam Memorial. Day 4: Enjoy breakfast, before we begin our day at Ford’s Theatre where we celebrate the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln with a self guided tour of the theater where Lincoln was shot and the Peterson House where he was taken directly after. This afternoon choose which of the 21 Smithsonian Museums you would like to explore. These include the Museum of Natural History and American History where you can view dinosaurs, First ladies gowns, and Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Rest stops and a lunch stop on our own are made for comfort and convenience. After we cross the “Mighty Mac," our first stop is Whitefish Point and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The museum has become one of Michigan’s most popular destinations where guests learn about the perils of maritime transport on the Great Lakes like the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. See the Historic Whitefish Point Light Station and take a stroll on Lake Superior’s shore and beautiful rocky beach. Following our visit, we will have an included dinner at the beautiful Timber Charlie’s, a local delight. After an incredible meal, we check into our hotel in Newberry, MI. Day 2 Breakfast is included this morning before departing for Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Upon arrival, we will meet our guide who will take us on a 45 minute tour to the Upper Falls. The Upper Falls are the largest waterfall east of the Mississippi with a drop of nearly 50 feet and 200 feet across. After that we will have time to hit the gift shop and lunch on our own before departing for Munising. This afternoon, we board a 2-1/2 hour cruise of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The lakeshore offers towering multicolored sandstone cliffs, mile-long sparkling beach strands, dashing water falls, a huge area of sand dunes and more. See such highlights as Miner’s Castle, Colored Caves, Indian Head and Chapel Rock. Following our cruise, we have an included dinner at a local restaurant before checking into our hotel for the evening. Day 3 Another included breakfast greets us this morning before departing for the Keweenaw Peninsula and Copper Country. We will pick up our step-on-guide and embark on a full day tour of the area including the Mineral Museum and Jampot. We will travel through Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Eagle River, Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain Drive. The Keweenaw Peninsula is the northernmost part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It projects into Lake Superior and was the site of the first copper boom in the United States. Brockway Mountain Drive runs along the ridge of Brockway Mountain on the Keweenaw Fault. Upon reaching the top of the mountain, we are greeted by a full panoramic view of the surrounding area including Lake Superior, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor and the surrounding lakes and forests. Lunch is on our own at a local restaurant. This evening we check into our hotel in Houghton, home for the next night. Dinner is included this evening at a charming restaurant. Day 4 Following our included breakfast this morning, we depart for Lake of the Clouds. Surrounded by the silhouettes of the ancient Porcupine Mountains, the Lake of the Clouds is a blue gem amid the thick forests and one of the most photographed features in the area. We will stop at Bond Falls, a beautiful water fall located along the Ontonagon River. Our next stop is the beautiful Pine Mountain Ski & Golf Resort, where we will enjoy an included lunch and visit the UP Sports Hall of fame! After lunch we will stop for a photo opportunity before departing for the Iron Mountain Iron Mine. We will travel 2,600 feet through drifts and tunnels to 400 feet below the earth’s surface where we see amazing rock formations and large underground lighted caverns. The mine operated for 68 years and produced tons of iron ore for the great steel mills of the Midwest. This afternoon, we check into Island Resort & Casino where we will spend the remainder of our evening. Whether it's championship golf, Vegas-style gaming or the Drift Spa, the total experience is waiting for you! * Everyone will receive a $20 food voucher good at any of the 6 delicious dining options! Day 5 A final day begins with a stop at Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan’s largest natural freshwater spring. Measuring two hundred feet across and forty feet deep, over 10,000 gallons of water per minute gush from the spring’s fissures in the underlying limestone. We’ll see this amazing attraction up close aboard an observation raft offering excellent views of the crystal clear waters and fascinating underwater features and mysteries lurking within. This afternoon, we spend some time in Mackinaw City with shopping and lunch on our own. We finish our trip with a dinner stop on our own en route before returning home. New River Gorge National Park Mill Creek Falls & Cathedral Falls Day 1: This morning we will meet our tour guide and professional driver as we embark to Snowshoe Resort in West Virginia. At 4,848’ elevation, Snowshoe Mountain sits atop one of the highest points in West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains. From this perch, we overlook unmatched wilderness adventure in all directions. We’re a stone’s throw from five state parks, one national and two state forests. Day 2: After our included breakfast this morning we board the Greenbrier Express. We will depart from the restored, historically important town of Cass and closely follow the clear, free-flowing Greenbrier River to the small mountain village of Durbin. The ride upriver to Durbin passes through a secluded wilderness portion of the 950,000-acre Monongahela National Forest featuring beautiful scenes of forested mountains at each turn of the river. Sightings of Deer, River Otters, and Black Bear along with a wide variety of Eagles, Hawks, Ospreys, and other different species of aquatic birds are common. After an included lunch in Durbin we will continue our train trip back to Cass before a scenic drive back to our resort where we will enjoy an included dinner Day 3: Another day of great adventure begins as we motor north into the Alleghenies. We will first head to the Green Bank Observatory. We’ll get up close with radio telescopes and learn about history, science, and technology of radio astronomy while enjoy the amazing fall views. Our next destination is the townsite of Cass. It looks much today as it did in its heyday as a company logging town. Restored company houses line the hillside. With a stop at the Historical Museum you’ll pick up a box lunch at the Company Store, and then board the Cass Scenic Railroad steam locomotive and pull out of the depot. This was a logging route with grades as steep as 11%, you’ll climb through deep forest with a beauty as old as the hills and then suddenly you will break out above the timber and enjoy a view of West Virginia that is beyond words. There is a point during the climb that if you pay attention you will notice that we enter a completely different ecosystem because of the change in the trees flowers and atmosphere. The train will take us to Bald Knob, the third highest peak in West Virginia. Dinner tonight is included at the resort followed by a show by a local musical entertainer for our enjoyment. Day 4: This morning we depart for White Sulphur Springs, WV for a visit the Greenbrier Bunker, a most unusual history tour. You will visit The Greenbrier’s Cold War Bunker, built by the Eisenhower Administration. It was a Fall Out Shelter for Congress in the event of a Nuclear Attack. This secret facility existed for 30 years, in plain sight, yet hidden from both hotel employees and guests. It’s a fascinating story and you will learn how the pantries were stocked and replenished with fresh produce and supplies. At any moment there was enough fresh water and food here to support the entire House & Senate for 60 days. Next we will enjoy breathtaking views from the rim of the New River Gorge as we enjoy our included lunch. Our day continues with a ranger guided walk in the New River Gorge National Park. We continue our scenic discovery as we visit two of West Virginia’s most beautiful waterfalls before checking into our hotel for the evening. Day 5: Today we will work our way home with heavenly memories of the West Virginia mountains and rails. The winery now has over 1,000 vines and produces over 6 tons of grapes annually. In 2012 they opened a tasting room to share their delicious wines with the rest of the world. They now make over a dozen kinds of wines, including wines made from other fruits, including cherries and blueberries, which they have become famous for. Winery will choose 4 wines and their knowledgeable staff will walk us through the tasting. The Barn - Archbold, OH (included lunch) - For more than 45 years families have gathered to enjoy home-style food and welcoming hospitality under the hand-hewn timbers of a barn built in 1861. Located in Archbold, OH, the Barn Restaurant continues to be a favorite spot to dine with family and friends. American Winery - Wauseon, OH (wine tasting) - The tasting house of American Winery and Brewery resides in an old farmhouse that was remodeled by Tom Shank, the owner. Weathered barn siding from old barns torn down near the estate covers the interior walls and ceiling to create a rustic look. Winery will choose 3 wines. Chateau Tebeau - Helena, OH (wine tasting and light buffet) - When the Tebeau’s purchased their 36-acre farm in 1996, they had no idea at the time what fate had in store for this limestone soil. They realized that this was not prime farmland, but that was not why they bought it. It was a love of nature and the rural lifestyle that made this property a great match. Knowing that grapes love limestone laced soil, it didn’t take long for Bob & Mary to start the research to turn this barren land into a productive vineyard and winery. 5 wines to taste.
